Ingredients

1 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/4 cup granulated sugar (for dough)

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp cinnamon (plus extra for coating)

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup granulated sugar (for coating)

Cooking spray or oil spray

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, combine the water, unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.

Once boiling, remove from heat and stir in the whole wheat flour and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon until a dough forms. Let it cool slightly for about 5 minutes.

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) while the dough cools.

Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. (If you don't have a piping bag, a plastic sandwich bag with the corner cut off works too.)

Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Lightly spray it with cooking spray.

Pipe long strips of dough (about 4-6 inches) into the basket, leaving space between each churro for expansion.

Lightly spray the churros with oil to help them crisp up while cooking.

Air fry the churros for about 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Check on them halfway through to ensure they're cooking evenly.

While the churros are cooking, mix the remaining 1/4 cup sugar with a teaspoon of cinnamon in a shallow dish.

Once the churros are done, immediately roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat them.

Serve warm with a side of chocolate sauce, caramel, or your favorite dipping sauce.
