The club sandwich has long held a cherished place in the hearts of sandwich lovers around the globe. Its origins can be traced back to the late 19th century, with several theories surrounding its creation. Some attribute its inception to the Union Club of New York City, where it was first served as a late-night snack to members. Over the years, the classic club sandwich has evolved into a staple in diners, restaurants, and homes alike. Traditionally, it consists of layers of turkey or chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, all cleverly stacked between three slices of toasted bread.

Ingredients

3 slices of whole grain bread

4 slices of crispy bacon

1 cup cooked turkey breast, sliced

1 medium tomato, sliced

1 avocado, mashed

4 leaves of romaine lettuce

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

Extra virgin olive oil (for toasting)

Instructions

Toast the Bread: Lightly brush each slice of whole grain bread with olive oil and toast in a skillet or toaster until golden brown and crispy.

Prepare the Spreads: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Spread this mixture on one side of two slices of toasted bread.

Layer the Ingredients: Start with one slice of bread (spread side up), layer on half of the mashed avocado, followed by half of the turkey slices, two slices of bacon, and a layer of romaine lettuce. Add a slice of tomato, and sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper.

Build the Second Layer: Place the second slice of toasted bread on top (spread side down) and repeat the layering process with the remaining avocado, turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato.

Finish with the Top Layer: Top off the creation with the third slice of toasted bread (spread side down). For added stability, secure each side with toothpicks.

Slice and Serve: Carefully cut the sandwich diagonally into quarters. Serve immediately with a side of crunchy pickles or potato chips.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 25 minutes | Servings: 1 sandwich (can be cut into 4 portions)
