Ingredients

1 package (17.3 oz) frozen puff pastry sheets (2 sheets, thawed)

8 oz thinly sliced ham (preferably honey or black forest)

8 oz cheese (Gruyère, Swiss, or your favorite melting cheese, shredded)

1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

1 tablespoon olive oil (for drizzling)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh herbs (such as parsley or thyme, for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Puff Pastry: On a floured surface, roll out each sheet of puff pastry to smooth it out. Cut each sheet into 4 squares (total of 8 squares).

Layer Ham & Cheese: Place a square of puff pastry on the baking sheet. If using Dijon mustard, spread a thin layer over the pastry. Layer 2 slices of ham on top, followed by a generous amount of shredded cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cover with another square of puff pastry.

Seal the Edges: Press the edges of the two pastry squares together using a fork or your fingers to seal them. Repeat this process for the remaining stacks.

Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the top of each puff pastry stack with the beaten egg. This will give them a beautiful golden color when baked.

Drizzle with Olive Oil: Lightly drizzle a bit of olive oil on top of each stack for extra crispiness.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the stacks are puffed up and golden brown.

Garnish: Once out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Serve: Enjoy your crispy ham and cheese puff pastry stacks warm as an appetizer, snack, or light lunch!
