Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon beef broth base (or bouillon powder)

4 slices Swiss cheese (or Gruyère)

4 burger buns (preferably brioche)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh thyme leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sprinkle with sugar. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are soft and caramelized, and turn a golden brown. Add the beef broth base for extra flavor and mix well. Remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the Burgers: While the onions are cooking, form the ground beef into four equal patties. Season each side with salt and pepper.

Cook the Burgers: In the same skillet (wipe it down if necessary), increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until your desired doneness is reached.

Melt the Cheese: During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt nicely.

Toast the Buns: If desired, you can toast the burger buns in a toaster or on a separate skillet until golden brown.

Assemble: On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a cheeseburger patty, topped with a generous helping of caramelized onions. Add the top bun to complete the burger.

Garnish and Serve: Optionally sprinkle fresh thyme leaves on top for an aromatic touch. Serve hot with your choice of side (fries, chips, or a salad).
