Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

1 egg, beaten

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

4 sub sandwich rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Make the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, beaten egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Meatballs: Shape the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. You should get around 16 meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs: In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of olive oil. Cook the meatballs in batches, turning occasionally until they are browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Simmer in Sauce: In the same skillet, pour the marinara sauce and add the browned meatballs back into the skillet. Reduce the heat and let them simmer in the sauce for about 15-20 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and flavorful.

Assemble the Subs: Slice the sub rolls down the middle without cutting all the way through. Place 3-4 meatballs in each roll and spoon additional marinara sauce over the top.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over each meatball sub.

Bake: Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Serve hot and enjoy your cheesy explosion meatball subs!
