Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

2 cups marinara sauce

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil and cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Add the minced garlic and ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Stir in the marinara sauce, dried basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes to combine the flavors.

In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper until well combined.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti, the meat sauce, and half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Stir until well combined.

In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture. Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the top, then layer with the remaining ziti. Finally, top with the remaining ricotta mixture and the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray) and bake for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Allow the baked ziti to cool for 10 minutes before garnishing with fresh basil or parsley. Serve hot and enjoy your Million Dollar Baked Ziti!
