Ingredients

4 slices of thick bread (such as brioche or challah)

2 large eggs

1/4 cup milk

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

4 slices of Swiss cheese

4 slices of turkey or ham (or a combination of both)

2 tablespoons butter

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Raspberry or strawberry jam for serving

Instructions

In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and Dijon mustard until well combined.

Lay out the bread slices on a clean surface. On two slices, layer 2 slices of Swiss cheese, followed by the turkey and/or ham. Top each with the remaining Swiss cheese, and then place the other two bread slices on top to form sandwiches.

Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.

Carefully dip the assembled sandwiches into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for 10 seconds on each side. Let any excess drip off.

Place the soaked sandwiches in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted, adding the remaining butter to the skillet as needed.

Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute.

If desired, dust the tops with powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness.

Slice the sandwiches in half diagonally and serve warm with raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping.
