To appreciate the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe fully, it's essential to understand the origins of its components. The Philly cheesesteak is a culinary icon that originated in Philadelphia in the early 20th century. This iconic sandwich was born from the creativity of Pat and Harry Olivieri, who first served thinly sliced ribeye steak with sautéed onions on a hoagie roll. Over the years, the cheesesteak evolved, incorporating different toppings such as cheese—typically Cheez Whiz, provolone, or American—and peppers, eventually becoming a staple of Philadelphia's culinary scene.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 small green bell pepper, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup beef broth

3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices provolone cheese

4 hamburger buns

2 tablespoons olive oil

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper, sautéing for about 3-4 minutes until softened.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary.

Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Once thickened, place a slice of provolone cheese on top of the meat mixture in the skillet. Cover the skillet for a minute to let the cheese melt.

Toast the hamburger buns lightly on a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes by spooning the cheesy beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Place the top half of the bun on top and garnish with fresh parsley.

Serve immediately with a side of crispy fries or a simple salad.
