Ingredients

1 pound of Italian sausage (mild or spicy, based on preference)

1 pound of ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese

4 burger buns (soft and toasted)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, dill pickles, and your favorite condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo)

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, a pinch of salt, and cook until caramelized (about 10-15 minutes), stirring occasionally. Set aside.

Mix the Meat: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with the Italian sausage. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined (do not overmix).

Shape the Patties: Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions. Form each portion into a ball and then flatten slightly to form burger patties about ½ inch thick.

Cook the Patties: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the patties on the skillet, leaving enough space between them. Using a spatula, smash each patty down gently to about 1 inch thick. This helps to develop a nice crust. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until browned and release easily from the skillet.

Add Cheese: Flip the patties and immediately place a slice of cheddar cheese on each. Cook for an additional 3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to your desired level of doneness.

Assemble the Burgers: Toast the burger buns lightly on the skillet or griddle. On the bottom half of each bun, place a generous amount of caramelized onions, followed by the cheesy sausage smash burger patties.

Add Toppings: Top with lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, and your choice of condiments. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.
