Ingredients

1 lb ground lamb or beef (or a mix)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 carrots, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup frozen peas

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried rosemary

½ cup vegetable or beef broth

Salt and pepper to taste

4 cups mashed potatoes (about 2 lbs potatoes)

½ cup milk

2 tablespoons butter

Grated cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: If you haven't done this ahead of time, peel and chop the potatoes into chunks. Boil them in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return to the pot. Add milk and butter, then mash until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Cook the Meat Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground lamb or beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Vegetables: To the skillet with meat, add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Season and Combine: Stir in the frozen peas, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, broth, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the mixture to thicken.

Assemble the Pie: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a baking dish, layer the meat mixture at the bottom. Spread the creamy mashed potatoes evenly on top. If desired, sprinkle grated cheese over the mashed potatoes for a delicious cheesy crust.

Bake: Place the assembled dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
