Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium saucepan, melt the 1 cup of butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar. Add in the eggs one by one, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract.

        - In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

          - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer.

            Make the Cookie Layer:

              - In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

                - In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.

                  - Spoon the cookie dough over the brownie layer and gently spread it out. It’s okay if the brownie layer is slightly visible; it creates a delicious swirl.

Bake: Bake in a preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (do not overbake!).

Cool and Serve: Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool in the baking dish for at least 15 minutes. Use the parchment paper to lift the brookies out. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into squares.
