Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Add the Meat: Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Combine with Tomatoes and Spices: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes to meld the flavors.

Mix the Cheese Filling: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth.

Assemble the Ziti: In a large baking dish (9x13 inches), spread 1 cup of the meat sauce on the bottom. Layer half of the cooked ziti over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta mixture on top, followed by one cup of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: meat sauce, ziti, ricotta mixture, and top with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and lightly golden.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
